Villa Simonini

An elegant residential villa in central Lucca, notable for its three-storey design and early twentieth-century modifications that transformed its layout and living spaces.

At a glance

Villa Simonini stands on Viale Giuseppe Giusti in Lucca, adjacent to Villa Del Magro. The residence exemplifies the architectural traditions of Lucchese domestic design, with a compact footprint and vertical organisation typical of urban villas in the region.

History

The villa originally comprised a three-storey structure, with the uppermost floor partly terraced. Between 1915 and 1916, significant modifications transformed the building: the terrace on the second and top floor was enclosed, creating new interior rooms that were integrated with existing spaces. Some rooms received new flooring during this work. In more recent times, further updates included new pavements on the ground floor and a suspended ceiling installed in a small reception room. The building now contains three separate apartments within the same ownership.

What you see

The villa displays the formal residential character of early twentieth-century Lucca. Its three-storey elevation reflects practical urban living requirements—compact but vertically extended to maximise space. The 1915–16 interventions reveal the pragmatic approach of that era, converting open-air terraces into enclosed rooms while respecting the building’s original structural framework.

Cultural significance

Villa Simonini documents the evolution of domestic architecture in Lucca during the early modern period. Its alteration between 1915 and 1916 illustrates changing lifestyle patterns and how twentieth-century residents adapted inherited structures to contemporary comfort standards without demolishing the original fabric.
