Villa Sesso Schiavo

A Renaissance villa in the heart of Sandrigo adorned with frescoes by Giovanni Antonio Fasolo, bearing witness to five centuries of Venetian patrician life.

At a glance

Villa Sesso Schiavo stands in central Sandrigo as a significant example of Venetian domestic architecture. Built in 1570 for the Sesso family, the villa preserves its original fresco cycle and reflects the power and fortune of its early patrons.

History

Silvio Sesso commissioned the villa in 1570. The Sesso family’s prominence is underscored by their 1532 hospitality to Emperor Charles V, who lodged with them during his journey to Bologna. The portrait of Silvio in armor adorns the sala della Storia.

In 1832, the last Sesso heir, Alessandro, relinquished the property to Antonio Schiavo, a knight and mayor of Sandrigo, after gambling debts consumed the family fortune. During World War I, the villa served as a British field hospital. Post-war, sections of its frescoed rooms housed Sandrigo’s maternity ward.

What you see

The villa’s principal ornament is its fresco decoration by Giovanni Antonio Fasolo, a major Veneto painter of the sixteenth century. The sala della Storia features Silvio Sesso’s armed portrait within the broader historical narrative typical of patrician villas. The building retains its Renaissance proportions and period details despite later institutional uses.

Cultural significance

Villa Sesso Schiavo exemplifies the villa veneta tradition, where wealthy Venetian merchants invested in country estates as symbols of status and sources of agricultural income. Its frescos document Renaissance artistic patronage in the Veneto heartland. The building’s successive roles—noble residence, military hospital, public service facility—illustrate how such properties adapted to centuries of social change.
