Villa Patt de Manzoni – Museo del 7° Reggimento Alpini

SEDICO, VENETO · 19TH–21ST CENTURY

Villa Patt de Manzoni

A neoclassical villa housing the Historical Museum of the 7th Alpine Regiment, preserving documents, photographs, weapons and artifacts spanning the unit’s history from 1887 to the present.

At a glance

Villa Patt de Manzoni, owned by the Province of Belluno, contains the museum dedicated to the 7th Alpine Regiment. The museum opened on 2 June 2007 in a wing of this 19th-century villa. Its collections document military campaigns from the First World War through recent peacekeeping missions.

Giovanni Antonio de Manzoni commissioned architect Giuseppe Jappelli to design a villa and park on his estate at Patt in 1835. Jappelli, the most celebrated Venetian garden architect of the 19th century, created the main residence in neoclassical style, while the surrounding agricultural land was transformed into a park. In 1870, Giuseppe Segusini designed a rustic Neo-Gothic wing featuring frescoed hunting trophies and geometric ornament. The collections of the museum originated in the Sacrarium Museum of the 7th Alpini, established in the Salsa Barracks in Belluno in December 1939.

What you see

The villa expresses neoclassical language inherited from Giannantonio Selva. Its exterior shows restraint: a flattened façade articulated by four giant-order pilasters at the center, smooth plaster with light rustication, and cleanly cut windows without decorative frames. The design approaches urban palazzo architecture, marking the moment when villas ceased functioning as agricultural estates and became suburban retreats.

Internally, the central body contains two ground-floor halls with magnificent frescoes painted by Belluno artists Giovanni De Min—The Struggle of the Spartan Women—and Pietro Paoletti—Aesop Recounting His Fables. A small tower displays Egyptian vedute frescoes and zodiacal constellations on the ceiling, likely drawn from designs by Belluno scientist and explorer Girolamo Segato.

Cultural significance

The museum preserves the institutional memory of the 7th Alpine Regiment from its founding in 1887. Its holdings document military service across diverse theaters: the First World War dominates the collections, complemented by materials from the Italo-Ethiopian wars and the Second World War, particularly campaigns on the Western Front and the Greco-Albanian front. The museum participates in both the Provincial Museum Network and the Great War Museums Network.
