Villa la Rotonda

Andrea Palladio’s masterpiece of central-plan design, this iconic Venetian villa near Vicenza has inspired architects worldwide and stands as one of the most celebrated buildings in modern architectural history.

At a glance

Villa la Rotonda—formally Villa Almerico Capra—is a Renaissance villa of perfect symmetry, positioned on the Riviera Berica near Vicenza. Its central plan and four identical façades represent a revolutionary approach to villa design that would influence architecture for centuries.

History

Paolo Almerico commissioned the villa from Andrea Palladio in 1566–1567. The Capra brothers acquired the incomplete building in 1591 and engaged Vincenzo Scamozzi to complete it in 1606. The villa was first opened in 1571, though construction continued for decades under multiple patrons.

What you see

The villa exemplifies Palladianism through its mathematical precision and harmonious proportions. Its distinctive central rotunda, crowned with a dome, sits at the heart of the structure. Four identical porticoed façades face outward in cardinal directions, each presenting a temple-front elevation—a radical departure from traditional villa design that treats every approach as a principal entrance.

Cultural significance

The Rotonda stands as perhaps Palladio’s most famous work and arguably the most celebrated Venetian villa ever built. Its influence permeates architectural history: the design has been imitated countless times across Europe and America, from neoclassical estates to civic buildings. UNESCO recognized this significance by designating it a World Heritage Site in 1994 as part of the Palladian Villas of the Veneto.
