Villa la Contessa occupies a hillside position in Lerici, a coastal town at the eastern end of the Gulf of Poets in Liguria. The Gulf of Poets — Golfo dei Poeti in Italian — earned its evocative name from the circle of Romantic poets who resided along its shores in the early 19th century, including Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron. The villa belongs to a tradition of aristocratic retreats built along this coast during the Belle Époque and early 20th century, when the mild Ligurian climate and dramatic scenery drew wealthy families and cultural figures from across Europe.
History
Lerici has been inhabited since antiquity and was contested between Genoa and Pisa during the medieval period before passing under Genoese control. The picturesque bay and its surrounding hills became fashionable among Italian and foreign aristocracy during the 19th century, leading to the construction of numerous villas overlooking the water. Villa la Contessa — whose name (“the Countess”) reflects its aristocratic origins — was built during this period of intensive villa construction, when wealthy families sought summer retreats along the Riviera di Levante. Percy Bysshe Shelley drowned in the bay in 1822, and his memory continued to draw literary travellers to the area throughout the century.
