Villa Giustinian Morosini

MIRANO, VENETO · 17TH–19TH CENTURY

Villa Giustinian Morosini

A Venetian country villa built in the mid-seventeenth century, now a municipal cultural space with grounds adjoining the public park XXV Aprile.

At a glance

Villa Giustinian Morosini stands as a landmark of Veneto’s aristocratic heritage. Completed in 1661, the complex blends centuries of ownership and restoration into a single ensemble. Today the municipality administers the buildings and gardens, which serve exhibitions and cultural events.

History

The Giustinian family commissioned the villa around the mid-seventeenth century, building on their established presence in the region—they had owned the nearby Villa Piarotto since the sixteenth century. Construction concluded in 1661.

The family’s fortunes waned over subsequent decades. In 1792, the Morosini “dalla Sbarra” acquired the property and undertook comprehensive restoration work. The nineteenth century brought further changes of ownership: the Marquis Paolucchi delle Roncole held it mid-century, followed by Jacopo Monico in the early 1900s.

The main residence housed the civic library until 2003, when the municipality redirected the space toward cultural programming.

What you see

The villa complex reflects the aesthetic preferences of its successive patrons. The Morosini restoration of 1792 left lasting marks on the structure. The grounds form a continuous garden space with the adjacent Villa Belvedere, creating a cohesive parkland within the public garden XXV Aprile.

Cultural significance

Villa Giustinian Morosini exemplifies the Venetian tradition of mainland villas as both residences and symbols of family status. Its transfer between major families traces shifts in regional power and wealth across three centuries. As a municipal venue, it now anchors contemporary cultural life in Mirano.
