Villa Contarini Pisani dei Leoni
A patrician villa on the Riviera Silvio Trentin, named for the pair of lions flanking its grand staircase. Home to frescoes by Giambattista Tiepolo commissioned in the late 17th century.
At a glance
This rectangular three-storey villa stands metres from the Church of San Nicolò in Mira. The complex includes the main house, a barchessa (agricultural outbuilding), and an oratory. Its distinctive lions, installed in the 19th century, became the building’s defining emblem.
History
Originally known as Villa Contarini, the structure was rebuilt in 1558 under the direction of Procurator Federico Contarini. In 1696, the Pisani family—the villa’s new owners—engaged Giambattista Tiepolo to execute a fresco cycle celebrating a royal visit. The decorative cycle commemorates King Henry III’s sojourn at the villa in 1574, decades before the Pisani acquired the property.
What you see
The villa presents a formal rectangular plan across three floors, typical of Veneto villa architecture. Its central staircase, crowned with its iconic pair of lions, dates to the 19th century and dominates the façade. The interior showcases Tiepolo’s fresco work, a masterpiece of Rococo decoration.
Cultural significance
The villa exemplifies the grandeur of Venetian patrician estates along the Brenta Riviera, a UNESCO World Heritage corridor. Tiepolo’s frescoes represent a pivotal moment in the artist’s career and remain among the finest examples of his decorative genius in the Veneto region.
