Villa Condulmer

A Venetian patrician residence in the Veneto countryside, later home to composer Giuseppe Verdi, now operating as a hotel.

At a glance

Villa Condulmer stands in Zerman, a frazione of Mogliano Veneto, as a substantial example of Venetian villa architecture. The complex comprises a central house and a long barchessa (agricultural wing), reflecting the dual purposes of patrician retreat and working estate that characterized Venetian mainland properties from the Renaissance onward.

History

The villa’s origins remain disputed among scholars. Giuseppe Venturini dates its construction to 1743, commissioned by the patrician Alvise Condulmer. Gianfranco Scarpari places it more broadly in the eighteenth century, while Giuseppe Mazzotti argues for a seventeenth-century foundation. Local tradition holds that the villa was built on the site of a demolished monastery, with the barchessa possibly incorporating remnants of the earlier structure.

After the fall of the Venetian Republic, the Condulmer line died out and the property passed to the Grassi family, prominent Venetian collectors and builders. In the nineteenth century, Angelo Grassi—the last of his line—bequeathed the villa to Giovanni Battista Tornielli of a friendly noble family.

The estate gained wider renown in 1853 when composer Giuseppe Verdi stayed here from 6 March onward, recuperating after the mixed reception of La Traviata‘s premiere. Subsequently the villa was inherited by the Bonaventura family, then the Monti. Legally protected since 1939, it has operated as a hotel in recent decades.

What you see

The complex demonstrates the functional layout typical of Venetian villas: a residential block aligned with utilitarian structures. The long barchessa, orthogonal to the main house, served agricultural and storage purposes—a practical arrangement that made the villa self-sustaining. Architectural details reflect eighteenth-century Venetian taste, though the surviving fabric bears the modifications of successive occupants and its conversion to hospitality use.

Cultural significance

Villa Condulmer embodies the Venetian tradition of mainland estates that balanced leisure, agricultural production, and prestige. Its association with Verdi adds cultural weight to its architectural interest, marking it as a waypoint in the composer’s biography. The villa also documents the transfer of wealth and property among Venetian families across three centuries—from patrician founders to merchant-collectors to modern institutional use.
