Villa Ameliatte Gasparetto – Villa Cosma
Villa Ameliatte Gasparetto, formerly known as Villa Cosma, is a privately owned villa renovated in the 1910s in a distinctive Moresque Liberty style — a blend of Italian Art Nouveau and Orientalist ornament rare in the Treviso countryside. The villa stands on the east side of the main square of Cison di Valmarino, a medieval village in the Prosecco hills, on the right bank of the Rujo stream at the foot of the historic Castelbrando complex.

Overview
The villa occupies a prominent position at the entrance to Cison di Valmarino’s historic core, facing the main square across the small bridge over the Rujo stream. Its Moresque Liberty decoration — featuring horseshoe arches, ornamental tilework, and sinuous plant motifs combined with Orientalist details — makes it an unusual specimen of early-twentieth-century eclectic taste in the Veneto. The building was known as Villa Cosma under its earlier ownership before passing to the Ameliatte Gasparetto family.
History
Cison di Valmarino has been inhabited since Roman times and is dominated by the vast Castelbrando fortress, one of the largest castle complexes in Italy. Villa Cosma — later Villa Ameliatte Gasparetto — was renovated in the decade of the 1910s as the Liberty architectural movement was transforming the facades of Veneto towns and villas. The choice of a Moresque variant of the style, incorporating North African and Islamic decorative vocabulary, reflects the cosmopolitan tastes circulating among cultivated northern Italian families in the Belle Époque era. The villa has remained in private use since its renovation.
What you see
Approaching from Via San Vito and crossing the bridge over the Rujo, the villa appears on the right with its elaborately decorated facade combining Liberty sinuous forms with Moorish-inspired arched elements and ornamental detailing. The building faces Piazza Roma, Cison’s central square, situating it at the intersection of civic and residential space. The surrounding streetscape includes medieval stone architecture and the rising profile of Castelbrando above the rooftops.
Cultural significance
Villa Ameliatte Gasparetto is documented as an example of Moresque Liberty architecture, a subcategory of Italian Art Nouveau characterised by the assimilation of Orientalist ornamental motifs. Such buildings are relatively uncommon in the Treviso countryside, where Liberty influence was more typically expressed in floral or geometric forms. The villa is listed in the OASIS heritage database for its architectural, artistic, and historical relevance to the Marca Trevigiana.
