History
Greek, Illyrian, and Frentan populations first settled the site in the 12th century BC. By 91 BC, it had developed into Histonium, the Roman Municipality—a thriving fishing village and Adriatic port until Lombard raids brought destruction in the Middle Ages.
The town was rebuilt as a fortress during the Caldora Lordship before experiencing cultural and economic renewal under the D’Avalos family during the Aragonese period. In 1710, Philip V of Spain elevated Vasto to the rank of city, inaugurating an era of sustained growth culminating in the proclamation of the Vastese Republic.
