History
The castle likely dates to the 13th century, an era fractured by the bitter conflicts between Guelphs and Ghibellines across northern Italy. Its first lords were the Da Lozzo family, who descended from the Maltraversi, a prominent Paduan dynasty that received the fiefdom from imperial authority in 983.
By the mid-14th century, Valbona had passed into the hands of the Carraresi, the powerful lords of Padua, who incorporated it into their western defensive network. The family’s heraldic coat of arms, carved in stone above the western entrance, testifies to their ownership and remains visible today.
The castle originally functioned as a dependent fortress rather than a principal residence. The main noble seat stood nearby, on the banks of the Bisatto river, where the 18th-century Villa Lando-Correr now stands.
