Overview
The University of Salento serves as the principal higher education institution of the Salento peninsula, offering programmes across eight departments spanning biological sciences, cultural heritage, economics, humanities, engineering, law, mathematics, and physics. With approximately 18,400 enrolled students as of 2020–2021, it is a significant intellectual and economic hub for the Mezzogiorno. The Mathematics and Physics department is named after Ennio De Giorgi, the celebrated Italian mathematician born in nearby Lecce.
History
The university was established in 1955 through the initiative of Giuseppe Codacci Pisanelli, a local jurist and politician who campaigned for decades to bring higher education to the historically underserved Salento region. Teaching began in 1955–1956, and the institution was formally absorbed into Italy’s national public university system during the 1967–1968 academic year. Since 2005 it has hosted a campus of the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC), reflecting its growing profile in environmental sciences. Rankings by Times Higher Education placed it between 251st and 275th globally in 2015, underscoring its development from a local college to an internationally recognised institution.
What you see
The main teaching and research activities are spread across the Ecotekne campus, a modern scientific park on the southern outskirts of Lecce, and the Cittadella della Ricerca in nearby Brindisi. Historical faculties occupy buildings integrated within Lecce’s celebrated old town, where the surrounding streetscape offers some of Italy’s finest examples of Lecce stone Baroque — the golden limestone facades carved with extraordinary exuberance by 17th-century craftsmen. The sports centre CUS Lecce completes the campus infrastructure with athletic facilities for students.
Cultural significance
Situated in Lecce — dubbed the “Florence of the South” for its richness of Baroque architecture — the University of Salento plays a central role in the study and preservation of Puglia’s cultural heritage. Its dedicated Department of Cultural Heritage contributes directly to the documentation, conservation, and promotion of the region’s archaeological and artistic patrimony, one of the densest concentrations of heritage sites in the Mediterranean.
