Overview
The restaurant is located in the Tuscia subregion — the ancient name for the territory of Viterbo, derived from the Etruscans who dominated this landscape before Rome. The area sits at the geographic crossroads of Lazio and southern Tuscany, which explains the evocative name blending both regional identities. The landscape is characterised by volcanic tufa formations, Etruscan necropolises, and medieval hilltop settlements within easy reach of the coast.
History
Tuscania itself is one of the most historically layered small towns in central Italy, with Etruscan occupation documented from at least the 7th century BC through rich tomb complexes still visible today. The medieval period left two superlative Romanesque churches — San Pietro and Santa Maria Maggiore — on the tufa ridge that once served as the town’s acropolis. The rural Maremma Laziale surrounding the restaurant was reclaimed for agriculture in the 19th and 20th centuries, and today its farms supply the local food tradition of the northern Lazio table.
What you see
The countryside around the restaurant offers views of the characteristic Maremma Laziale — a gently undulating plateau of pasture, macchia mediterranea, and cultivated fields, punctuated by the rocky profiles of tufa outcrops. On clear days the Tyrrhenian coast is visible to the west, while the inland hills of the Cimini range frame the eastern horizon. The town of Tuscania, with its distinctive medieval skyline dominated by the campanili of its two Romanesque churches, lies within a short drive.
Cultural significance
The Tuscia region is recognised as one of Italy’s most significant repositories of Etruscan heritage, with UNESCO-listed necropolis sites at Cerveteri and Tarquinia within the same province. Restaurants in this tradition preserve culinary forms tied to the pastoral and agricultural practices that have shaped northern Lazio for three millennia. The “Tuscany Bay” concept reflects the broader territorial identity of a landscape that has always existed at the border of two great regions.
