Overview
Turris Libisonis lies within the modern town of Porto Torres, situated on the coast about 25 kilometres east of Cape Falcone and at the centre of the Gulf of Asinara. The colony grew around one of the island’s principal harbours, today the second-busiest seaport in Sardinia. Its archaeological park gathers the surviving public and domestic structures of the Roman settlement.
History
The colony was founded during the 1st century BC as Colonia Iulia Turris Libisonis, the first Roman colony on the entire island of Sardinia. Its position on the northern coast made it a key node for maritime trade across the western Mediterranean. The settlement developed an organised urban fabric of streets, baths and civic buildings that remained in use through the imperial period.
What you see
The park preserves the layout of the Roman port city, including paved streets and the remains of public buildings. Visitors encounter the foundations and structures that document daily life in a Mediterranean colonial centre. The proximity to the modern harbour underlines the continuity of Porto Torres as a maritime gateway from antiquity to the present.
Cultural significance
As the first Roman colony on Sardinia, Turris Libisonis holds a foundational place in the island’s history of Romanisation. Its remains offer evidence of how Rome organised colonial settlement and trade on its Mediterranean periphery.
