University of Trieste
A modern Italian university with roots in 19th-century Austro-Hungarian commercial education, purpose-built on the Scoglietto hill during the Fascist era.
At a glance
Founded in 1924 as a state university, the University of Trieste evolved from the High School of Commerce established by Baron Pasquale Revoltella’s bequest in 1877. Its present campus emerged from ambitious architectural plans unveiled in the 1930s.
History
The institution originated as the Revoltella Foundation’s High School of Commerce in 1877, serving Trieste during the Austro-Hungarian period. Following the city’s annexation to Italy after World War I, the school was formally recognized as equivalent to other Italian commercial institutes in 1919.
By royal decree on 8 August 1924, it became the Royal University of Economic and Commercial Studies. The addition of a Faculty of Law in 1938 elevated it to Studium Generale status, marking its transformation into a comprehensive university. The first stone of the new headquarters was laid on 19 September 1938 in the presence of Benito Mussolini.
What you see
The main university complex occupies a commanding position on the Scoglietto hill overlooking Trieste. Architects Raffaello Fagnoni and Umberto Nordio designed the campus, constructed by the Roman firm Ulysses Igliori. The building’s elevated setting reflects the institutional ambitions of its era.
Cultural significance
The University of Trieste represents a crucial bridge between the city’s Central European mercantile heritage and its modern Italian identity. Baron Revoltella’s philanthropic vision sustained commercial education through political upheaval; his foundation became the nucleus of a major research university serving the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
