Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Three iconic limestone peaks rising above the Dolomites, legendary in mountaineering for their dramatic north faces and panoramic alpine vistas.
At a glance
The Tre Cime di Lavaredo stand among the Dolomites’ most celebrated summits, recognized worldwide as exceptional natural wonders. The Cima Grande, the highest of the three peaks, presents one of the Alps’ classic north faces. From these heights, visitors gain sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and the protected Tre Cime Natural Park.
History
Historical records show German-language names for the peaks dating to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including Dreyspiz, drey Spitz, and Zwain hohen Spizenn, though the evidence for the toponymy’s Germanic origin remains limited. Peter Anich and Blasius Hueber’s 1774 Atlas Tyrolensis refers to them as 3 Zinnern Spize.
Between 1915 and 1917, the Tre Cime formed a military front during World War I. Physical traces of that conflict—trenches, tunnels, and barracks—remain visible on the massif and nearby Monte Paterno. On July 9, 1974, a Bell 206 Italian Army helicopter crashed between the Three Peaks and Mount Paterno, killing those aboard. A commemorative plaque incorporating fragments from the aircraft marks the tragedy.
What you see
The three distinctive limestone formations dominate the landscape with sharp, vertical profiles characteristic of Dolomite geology. Their exposed rock faces reveal millions of years of Alpine uplift and erosion. The dramatic topography offers mountaineers multiple climbing routes of varying difficulty.
Cultural significance
The Tre Cime epitomize the Dolomites’ role in European mountaineering culture. Their commanding presence in photographs and artistic representations has made them symbols of alpine grandeur. The peaks hold profound significance for climbers seeking to test themselves on classic routes, while their wartime history connects them to twentieth-century European memory.
