Town Hall – Accursio Palace

A composite medieval civic complex on Piazza Maggiore housing government offices, art, and a frescoed chapel.

At a glance

Bologna’s Town Hall occupies a site first acquired by the Municipality at the end of the thirteenth century. The complex incorporates the former residence of Accursio, a renowned master of law, alongside successive buildings united over centuries into a coherent administrative centre.

History

The Municipality acquired the site’s original nucleus in the late 1200s. Initially, the ensemble served to preserve public grain reserves and to accommodate municipal offices. In 1336, when the Elders—Bologna’s highest governmental magistracy—established their residence here, the palace became the seat of city government, a role it has maintained ever since.

The complex grew through the gradual incorporation of neighbouring properties, reflecting Bologna’s expanding administrative needs.

What you see

The Town Hall is not a single building but an integrated cluster of structures that reveal layers of medieval construction and adaptation. Within the complex stands a chapel decorated with frescoes, offering glimpses of the spiritual life embedded in civic space.

Cultural significance

The inclusion of Accursio’s house—home to one of Bologna’s most celebrated legal scholars—underscores the city’s historical identity as a centre of learning and jurisprudence. The palace itself exemplifies the medieval Italian commune’s transformation from trading centre to organized state, where grain storage, legal authority, and artistic patronage converged under one roof.
