Eiffel Tower

The world’s most iconic iron lattice monument, the Eiffel Tower stands at the northwestern end of the Champ de Mars as the defining symbol of Paris and France.

At a glance

Towering above the 7th arrondissement, the Eiffel Tower dominates the Parisian skyline and draws millions of visitors annually. The structure rises from a floor 33.50 meters above sea level, positioned near the Seine’s banks where pleasure boats moor. Its location sits within a district rich with architectural landmarks—the École Militaire, Pont d’Iéna, Palais de Chaillot and UNESCO headquarters frame the tower within a constellation of cultural significance.

History

The tower officially opened to the public at 11:50 am on May 15, 1889, exactly two years, four months and seven days after its foundation was laid. The opening came nine days into the Paris Exposition. Gustave Eiffel himself was the first to sign the guest register, writing: “Midday minus ten, May 15, 1889. The tower is open to the public. Long last!”

What you see

The tower’s iron lattice construction represents a revolutionary engineering achievement of the late 19th century. Its geometric design and soaring proportions create a silhouette instantly recognizable across the globe. The structure’s form balances industrial precision with an almost organic elegance, rising in stages that create rhythm and visual interest from every angle.

Cultural significance

No monument encapsulates Paris—or France—more completely than the Eiffel Tower. It has transcended its origins as an exposition centerpiece to become a universal emblem of the city itself. The tower represents a pivotal moment when iron engineering merged with artistic ambition, making it a cornerstone of modern cultural identity.
