Viggianello
A small town in the Mercure Valley where the Pollino massif descends to meet the river, Viggianello preserves traces of its Roman past as a garrison on the Via Appia.
At a glance
Viggianello sits in the province of Potenza, in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, at the foot of the Pollino massif. With approximately 2,900 inhabitants, it occupies the Mercure Valley where the Mercure-Lao River originates within its territory.
History
The earliest documented reference to the settlement is Castrum Byanelli, a Roman garrison positioned on the Via Appia. The town’s name derives from the Roman noble possessive Vibianus, a diminutive of the personal name Vibius.
Local tradition offers an alternative origin. According to legend, a barbarian queen stopped at the Mercure’s banks to drink and lost her wedding ring in the water. The queen commanded her followers to search the riverbed until one spotted the ring’s reflection, crying out in jubilation—a shout that allegedly gave the place its name, Vidianello.
