The Sila Ship – Museum Narrator of Emigration
A museum dedicated to Italian emigration, housed in a restored 19th-century cow house in the heart of Sila, documenting the historical and human dimensions of mass migration from southern Italy.
At a glance
The Sila Ship is a cultural institution addressing a significant gap in Calabrian and Italian historical memory. The museum operates as a dynamic space presenting emigration not merely as loss, but as a movement embodying openness and human resilience across multiple continents.
History
Inaugurated in 2005 as a project of the Napoli Novantanove Foundation and curated by historian Gian Antonio Stella, the museum occupies a carefully restored 19th-century cow house in Old Calabria Park. The building’s restoration was undertaken by architect Sila Barracco. In July 2013, the MARE MADRE section opened, dedicated to immigration—reflecting Calabria’s evolving role from a region of emigration to one increasingly receiving migrants.
What you see
The museum occupies multiple rooms within the restored historic structure. A large conference hall hosts lectures, screenings, and discussions on migratory themes. The library holds an expanding collection of publications on Italian emigration and migration studies. A dedicated media room provides access to films and documentaries on the subject.
Internet stations with curated links guide visitors through archives documenting Italian diaspora communities in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Argentina, and beyond. A café serves regional products, and a terrace overlooking the Silan landscape accommodates both casual visits and formal receptions.
Cultural significance
The museum addresses the experience of mass emigration from Calabria and southern Italy—one of the defining movements of modern European history. Rather than treating migration as tragedy alone, the institution emphasizes its complex legacy: the courage, adaptability, and cultural exchange it generated across the world.
The addition of the MARE MADRE section acknowledges contemporary immigration, positioning the museum as a living archive of ongoing human mobility rather than a historical monument alone.
