Temo River

Sardinia’s only navigable river winds through the provinces of Sassari and Oristano, carving a path from mountain springs to the sea near the medieval town of Bosa.

At a glance

The Temo River originates at approximately 500 metres above sea level on the slopes of Mount Calarighe, in the municipality of Villanova Monteleone. It travels roughly 6 kilometres as a navigable waterway before reaching the sea, making it a unique feature of Sardinia’s hydrological landscape.

History

The Temo begins its journey as the Rio Lacanu, flowing from the mountainous terrain of northern Sardinia. Upon entering the Temo lake, it assumes its permanent name and continues its course southeastward. The river has long served as a geographical and cultural boundary, passing through the historic town of Bosa before emptying into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

What you see

The Temo’s landscape varies dramatically along its course. The upper reaches flow through rugged terrain before stabilising into a broader channel through the Temo lake. Where it passes Bosa, the river widens considerably, reflecting medieval stone bridges and the terracotta roofs of the town’s historic centre before entering the coastal delta.

Cultural significance

As Sardinia’s sole navigable river, the Temo holds exceptional ecological and cultural importance. Its regularity from the Temo lake onward has made it vital to agriculture and settlement patterns throughout the region. The river defines the character of Bosa, one of Sardinia’s most picturesque coastal towns.
