Tartaro Theatre Gallery

A restored Art Nouveau cinema and cultural venue, reopened to serve Galatina’s civic life after two decades of closure.

At a glance

The Tartaro Theatre Gallery stands as a recovered landmark of early twentieth-century leisure architecture. Built during the height of Italy’s Liberty (Art Nouveau) movement, the theater underwent comprehensive restoration to return it to active public use.

History

Inaugurated in 1930, the Tartaro was born from the architectural vision of the Tartaro family, who championed its construction during a period of flourishing Art Nouveau influence in Italy. The theater enjoyed its most prominent years in the decades following its opening, establishing itself as a cultural landmark throughout the province alongside the theaters of the regional capital.

After approximately twenty years of disuse, the building faced deterioration and structural decline. A coordinated renovation project was undertaken to save the theater from abandonment and restore it to the urban fabric of Galatina.

What you see

The façade embodies the Liberty style characteristic of the 1930s—refined, decorative, and distinctly Italian in its interpretation of Art Nouveau principles. The restoration revealed the building’s original materials and proportions.

Inside, a contemporary functional transformation complements the historic shell. A soaring central atrium—conceived as an enclosed yet open space—rises beneath an aluminum and glass roof, functioning as an interior plaza that mediates between the historic theater and the city beyond. A dual-level lounge bar and restaurant occupy the third floor, featuring modern steel and glass construction that contrasts with the period architecture.

Cultural significance

The theater represents a crucial piece of Galatina’s twentieth-century identity. Its restoration exemplifies contemporary conservation practice: honoring historical fabric while introducing new functions that sustain the building’s relevance to modern urban life.
