Museum of Art and Technology of the Confettiera — Pelino Confetti Factory, Sulmona
The Museum of Art and Technology of the Confettiera at the Pelino factory in Sulmona is one of Italy’s most distinctive industrial heritage museums, documenting over two centuries of continuous artisan production of confetti — sugar-coated almonds that are among Sulmona’s most celebrated exports. Founded on the site of a factory established in 1783, the museum preserves antique machinery, decorative moulds, floral confetti displays, and period advertising material that trace the evolution of this refined craft from Napoleonic-era workshops to the present day.

Overview
Sulmona, the birthplace of the Roman poet Ovid, has been the undisputed capital of Italian confetti production since the Renaissance. The Pelino family, whose factory dates to 1783, represents the oldest continuously operating confetti enterprise in the city and has transformed part of its historic premises into a public museum. The collection documents both the technical craft of sugar-coating almonds and the elaborate decorative traditions — particularly the fashioning of intricate floral arrangements from silk and confetti — that have made Sulmona confetti an international luxury product.
History
The Pelino confetti factory was founded in 1783, placing it among the oldest food-manufacturing enterprises in Abruzzo and among the earliest in Italy to mechanise aspects of confetti production. Sulmona’s confetti tradition, however, stretches back to at least the 15th century, when local confectioners supplied sugar almonds to aristocratic and papal courts. The Pelino family navigated the disruptions of the Napoleonic period, Italian unification, and two world wars while maintaining production and accumulating an extraordinary archive of tools, machinery, and promotional materials. The decision to open a museum within the working factory made the heritage accessible to visitors without interrupting production.
What you see
The museum occupies rooms adjacent to the working factory and displays the iron pans, sugar-coating drums, and drying machinery used across different eras of production. Decorative moulds in copper and brass reveal the ingenuity required to produce the elaborate floral shapes and animal figures for which Sulmona confetti is internationally recognised. Period packaging, vintage advertising posters, and photographic documentation trace the family business’s commercial history. A permanent display illustrates the art of confetti floral arrangements — silk-and-sugar compositions that serve as traditional Italian wedding and celebration favours.
Cultural significance
The Pelino museum is a rare example of living industrial heritage: the tradition it documents has not been interrupted or museified but continues in adjacent production halls. Sulmona confetti have achieved Protected Geographical Indication status under Italian food law, and the Pelino factory remains one of the primary custodians of the craft knowledge underlying that recognition. For cultural heritage scholars, the museum illustrates how artisan identity and commercial production can reinforce one another over multiple generations.
