Strong Diamond (Forte Diamante)

A mid-18th-century mountain fortress built to defend the vulnerable ridge north of Sperone, now closed to the public but visible from surrounding terrain.

At a glance

Strong Diamond occupies the heights between Val Polcevera and Val Bisagno, part of Genoa’s advanced defensive network. Built under engineer Jacques De Sicre’s direction, it served alongside three companion forts—Brother Older, Brother Minor, and Puin—to guard the Spur sector of the New Walls against external attack.

History

Military activity on Monte Diamante dates to at least 1395, when records mention the “Bastia del Pino,” though this position later fell from use. The site regained strategic importance during the Austrian siege of 1747, when a small star-shaped palisade was hastily constructed to monitor the valleys for Austrian movements.

Formal construction of the permanent fortification occurred between 1756 and 1758 as part of Genoa’s expanded entrenched-camp system. The fort remained active until 1914, when military authorities abandoned it entirely. Subsequent decay was arrested only by occasional conservation work undertaken by the municipality of Sant’Olcese, in whose territory the fort uniquely stands outside Genoa proper.

What you see

The fort’s design reflects 18th-century military engineering principles, positioned to command the ridge’s dominant terminal position and protect against incursion through the surrounding valleys. Its fortified layout exemplifies the logic of the entrenched camp model favored in that era.

Cultural significance

Strong Diamond represents a crucial phase in Genoa’s defensive modernization, undertaken as maritime republics across the Mediterranean reinforced their territorial boundaries. The fort’s integration into a coordinated chain of strongpoints demonstrates sophisticated military planning and remains important for understanding 18th-century Ligurian history.
