Street of the Portico (Via del Porticato)

An ancient road that once ran over archaic walls, the Sipportica was progressively enclosed by medieval houses and towers, transforming from an open passage into a covered urban thoroughfare.

At a glance

The Street of the Portico, also called the Sipportica, is a rare surviving example of urban transformation in medieval Cori. Originally an unobstructed passage over the town’s ancient defensive walls, it was gradually built over and concealed by residential structures from the 12th century onward, becoming fully enclosed by the 17th century.

History

The Sipportica originated as an archaic road traversing Cori’s earliest fortifications. Beginning in the 12th century, property owners began constructing houses and towers directly over the street, progressively reclaiming this public space for private use. By the 17th century, the transformation was complete—the once-open passage had become entirely subsumed within the built environment of the medieval town.

What you see

Today, the Street of the Portico survives as a covered passage accessed through the Porta Ninfina, an entrance portal that leads into the complex of medieval arcades. The structure reflects centuries of incremental construction, with walls and vaults bearing witness to successive building campaigns that layered residential quarters atop the original street level.

Cultural significance

The Sipportica offers tangible evidence of how medieval towns adapted and densified over time, absorbing ancient infrastructure into new urban patterns. Its preservation illustrates the archaeological richness of Cori’s historic center and the continuity between antique and medieval settlement layers.
