Overview
Spoleto sits on a spur of the Apennines at the southern edge of the Umbrian valley. The historic centre rises in tiers toward the Rocca Albornoziana, the fortress that crowns the hill. The city is celebrated each summer as the home of the Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds), one of Italy’s major performing-arts events.
History
An important centre well before Roman times, Spoleto became a Roman colony in 241 BC and a strategic point on the road network of central Italy. In the early Middle Ages it was the seat of an important Lombard duchy. Over the following centuries it passed through papal and communal phases that shaped its dense layering of monuments.
What you see
Visitors encounter Roman remains, medieval churches and a Romanesque cathedral within a compact, steeply built historic core. The hilltop Rocca Albornoziana fortress and the Ponte delle Torri, a tall multi-arched bridge spanning a wooded gorge, are among the most recognisable features of the townscape. Narrow streets and stairways connect the upper and lower town.
Cultural significance
Spoleto is one of Umbria’s foremost art cities, valued for the depth of its archaeological and medieval heritage. As host of the Festival dei Due Mondi it has also become a reference point for contemporary music, theatre and dance in Italy.
Practical information
Spoleto is an open historic city; individual monuments and museums keep their own opening hours and ticketing. Check the official municipal tourism website for current times and admission details before visiting.
Getting there
Spoleto lies in central Umbria and is served by its own railway station on the line between Rome, Foligno and Ancona. By road it is reached via the SS3 Flaminia. Perugia is roughly an hour to the north-west.
