Social Theatre of Pinerolo
The Teatro Sociale di Pinerolo is a 19th-century theatre in Pinerolo, in the Piedmontese foothills southwest of Turin. Built between 1836 and 1842 to a design by architect Tommaso Onofrio di Canelli, it received royal approval on 30 June 1838 and was formally constituted by notarial deed the following year. It stands as one of the finest examples of provincial theatrical architecture in Piedmont, designed on the model of the royal theatres of Turin.

The project was initiated by a consortium of Pinerolo citizens and received royal sanction from the Savoy court in 1838, with construction entrusted to the entrepreneur Gabriele Ghiano working from Tommaso Onofrio di Canelli’s plans. The building was completed in 1842 and hosted spoken drama, opera, and civic events from its opening. Like many provincial theatres of its era, it passed through periods of intense use and relative neglect in the late 19th and 20th centuries before restoration efforts revived it as a cultural venue.

The auditorium follows the traditional horseshoe plan with tiered boxes arranged around a central parterre, providing good sightlines from most positions. Decorative plasterwork and painted panels enliven the interior. The theatre’s modest scale, appropriate to a provincial town of Pinerolo’s size, gives it an intimate character that larger houses cannot replicate.
