Sesto al Reghena
A village in the lower Veneto-Friuli plain shaped by medieval monastic and aristocratic disputes, and the territorial ambitions of the powerful Ezzelini family.
At a glance
Sesto al Reghena sits on the border between Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Province of Venice. The village’s recorded history centres on property conflicts involving the local monastery and the Ezzelini dynasty during the 12th and 13th centuries.
History
In 1182, Ecelo II, a monk of the Ezzelini family, challenged the monks of Sesto al Reghena’s monastery over disputed properties. The conflict escalated when the patriarch of Grado issued an excommunication against Ecelo. Pope Innocent III became involved, and on April 24, 1198, he commissioned Pellegrino, patriarch of Aquileia, to mediate between the two contenders and resolve the dispute after clearing Ecelo of his excommunication.
Sesto al Reghena was one of several localities where members of the Ezzelini family held extensive properties. Following their definitive military defeat in 1260, the family’s landholdings were carefully documented and surveyed, establishing a clearer record of territorial ownership in the region.
Cultural significance
The history of Sesto al Reghena reflects broader patterns of medieval power in northern Italy: the tension between monastic institutions and secular nobility, and the Ezzelini family’s dominance across the Veneto-Friuli territories. The papal mediation of 1198 illustrates the Church’s role in resolving secular disputes.
