Sardinian Railway Museum of Cagliari
The Sardinian Railway Museum (Museo delle Ferrovie della Sardegna) in Cagliari is one of Italy’s most distinctive railway heritage sites, housed at the historic Monserrato depot and preserving the rolling stock and infrastructure of Sardinia’s narrow-gauge railway network. The collection documents over a century of island rail history, including the celebrated Trenino Verde tourist trains that still operate through remote areas of the Sardinian interior.

Overview
The Sardinian Railway Museum preserves the heritage of Sardinia’s distinctive narrow-gauge railway system (950 mm gauge), which was developed from the 1880s onwards to connect isolated inland communities to the coast. The museum is managed by ARST, the regional transport authority, and holds a collection of steam and diesel locomotives, historic carriages, maintenance equipment, and archival material relating to the island’s railway history. It is closely linked to the Trenino Verde (Green Train) tourist service, which operates seasonal scenic journeys on the surviving narrow-gauge lines.
History
Sardinia’s narrow-gauge railway network was established by the Strade Ferrate Sarde company starting in 1881, funded by the Italian state to improve communications across the island’s rugged interior. At its peak the network extended to over 600 kilometres of track, serving mining communities, agricultural areas, and coastal towns. As road transport expanded through the 20th century, many lines were closed, but the surviving sections and their historic rolling stock were preserved as a heritage asset. The museum at the Monserrato depot was established to document this unique chapter of Sardinian industrial history.
What you see
The museum displays a remarkable collection of narrow-gauge steam locomotives dating from the 1880s through the 1930s, alongside diesel railcars and historic passenger carriages in original liveries. Exhibits also include station furniture, ticketing equipment, maintenance tools, signalling apparatus, and photographic archives illustrating life along the Sardinian railways. The depot buildings themselves — constructed in late 19th-century industrial style — are an integral part of the heritage experience.
Cultural significance
The Sardinian narrow-gauge railways represent a unique engineering response to the island’s terrain and were instrumental in integrating remote communities into the broader Italian economy. The museum and the surviving Trenino Verde tourist trains keep this heritage alive, attracting rail enthusiasts and heritage tourists from across Europe. The collection is protected under Italian cultural heritage legislation.
