Route Nationale 8
A 198-kilometre dirt road linking Morondava to Bekopaka, famous for its stretch lined with centuries-old baobab trees protected as a natural monument.
At a glance
Route Nationale 8 traverses western Madagascar, connecting three major points along a remote corridor. The most celebrated section—between Morondava and Belo Sur Tsiribihina—bears the poetic names Allée des baobab, Avenue des baobab, or Rue des baobab, earned by the monumental trees lining its path. This stretch has become one of Madagascar’s most visited natural attractions.
History
The road has long served as an important terrestrial link across western Madagascar’s sparsely populated landscape. Recognition of its ecological and scenic value led to formal protection in 2007, when the Malagasy Ministry of the Environment designated the baobab avenue for safeguarding. The government has since pursued its classification as a Natural Monument.
What you see
The route is an unpaved dirt track suitable for travel only during the dry season, from May through December. The northern section beyond Belo Sur Tsiribihina serves as the primary gateway to the Tsingy Integral Nature Reserve of Bemaraha, a landscape of dramatic limestone formations. Along the celebrated southern stretch, ancient Adansonia grandidieri baobabs rise from the earth at intervals, their massive trunks and sparse branches creating an otherworldly botanical corridor.
Cultural significance
The Allée des baobab represents Madagascar’s biodiversity heritage and its commitment to environmental preservation. The baobabs themselves are emblematic of the island’s unique flora, and this natural avenue has achieved iconic status in Madagascar’s cultural landscape. The road’s connection to Bemaraha reinforces its importance as a route linking some of the island’s most significant protected areas.
