Overview

Roseto degli Abruzzi is a town and comune of the province of Teramo, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. It is a beach resort on the Adriatic Sea with about 24,000 inhabitants, positioned on the estuaries of the Vomano and Tordino rivers. It is the second largest city in the province of Teramo.

History

Roseto developed along the Adriatic coast at the mouths of the Vomano and Tordino, growing through the modern era as a seaside town. In recent decades the comune has expanded markedly, with growth in the northern quarter of Borsacchio, in Campo a Mare along the seacoast, and in Voltarrosto to the west. This expansion reflects its role as a coastal centre and the second city of its province.

What you see

The town is defined by its long Adriatic seafront, with sandy beaches, bathing establishments and a promenade that gives the resort its character. The built-up area spreads between the river estuaries, with residential districts extending north toward Borsacchio and west toward Voltarrosto. The setting between the rivers and the sea shapes the open, coastal feel of the town.

Cultural significance

As the second largest city in the province of Teramo and a long-established Adriatic resort, Roseto degli Abruzzi is a focal point of the northern Abruzzo coast. Its riverine setting and seaside development make it a representative example of the region’s coastal towns.

Practical information

The seafront and town centre are freely accessible, with the beaches busiest in the summer season. Opening hours for any churches, museums or civic sites vary; check official local tourism resources before visiting.

Getting there

Roseto degli Abruzzi lies on the Adriatic railway line and has its own station, with regional connections along the coast toward Pescara and Teramo. By car it is reached via the coastal roads and the nearby A14 Adriatic motorway. The closest airport is at Pescara, to the south.
