Overview
Riva del Garda, often known simply as Riva, is a town and comune in the northern Italian province of Trento. It sits at the northern tip of Lake Garda, where the lake is hemmed in by dramatic mountain walls. The town combines a historic harbour with a popular waterfront promenade.
History
Riva grew as a harbour and trading town controlling the northern end of Lake Garda. Its waterfront fortress, the Rocca, guarded the port and the routes between the lake and the Alpine valleys. Long part of the Tyrolean and Austrian dominions, Riva became a celebrated lakeside resort in the 19th and early 20th centuries before passing to Italy.
What you see
The medieval Rocca, surrounded by water, rises beside the old harbour and today houses the town museum. The Torre Apponale, a tall medieval tower, dominates the central piazza. The lakeside promenade, framed by mountains plunging to the water, leads toward beaches and the cliffs at the lake’s northern edge.
Cultural significance
Riva del Garda has long drawn writers and travellers attracted by its mild climate and striking scenery. Its fortress, tower and historic centre make it one of the most evocative heritage towns on Lake Garda.
Practical information
The historic centre, harbour and lakefront are freely accessible year-round. For Rocca museum opening hours and events, check the official town and museum websites.
Getting there
Riva del Garda has no railway station of its own; the nearest stations are Rovereto and Mori, connected by bus. The town is also reached by lake ferries across Garda and by car via the SS45bis and SS240 roads.
