Overview
Il MuMa takes its setting in Verezzi, one of four medieval hamlets — Poggio, Crosa, Roccaro and Piazza — that together make up the hilltop village above the sea resort of Borgio. The village is best known in Italy as the site of the prestigious Estate Teatrale Verezzi, an open-air theatre festival held each summer since 1967 in Piazza Sant’Agostino. The restaurant name is believed to reference the local identity of the village and its municipal context along this stretch of the western Ligurian Riviera.
History
Borgio Verezzi takes its dual name from the coastal marine borgo and the ancient hilltop settlements that predate it. The four hamlets of Verezzi preserve their medieval fabric of narrow caruggi, vaulted passages and stone buildings that served as refuge from coastal pirate raids in the early modern period. The Riviera di Ponente in this area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as demonstrated by finds in the nearby Grotta di Borgio, a show cave containing stalactite formations and Palaeolithic remains.
What you see
From the heights of Verezzi the view extends along the arc of the Ligurian coast, with the headlands of Capo Noli to the east and Capo Mele to the west framing the blue expanse of the Ligurian Sea. The village’s stone architecture, flower-draped balconies and the summer theatrical stage in Piazza Sant’Agostino create a setting of unusual intimacy and cultural vitality on the Italian Riviera.
Cultural significance
Verezzi is one of the best-preserved hillside villages on the western Ligurian Riviera and its theatre festival has made it a cultural landmark of the region for more than fifty years. Dining here offers direct contact with Ligurian culinary traditions: pesto, trofie, farinata, focaccia and fresh seafood from the nearby coast are the pillars of a cuisine shaped by the sea and the terraced hillsides.
