Overview
The Riga Aviation Museum holds a substantial collection of aircraft, engines, instruments and aviation memorabilia relating to the history of flying in Latvia and the wider Soviet sphere. The museum is located at Riga Airport, which itself has historic significance as a hub for Baltic aviation since the interwar period. Visitors can walk among full-size aircraft on the outdoor apron and examine technical exhibits in covered halls.
History
Latvia has a notable aviation history dating to the independent republic of the 1920s and 1930s, when Riga was a stop on several European air routes. The Soviet period brought large-scale military and civil aviation infrastructure, leaving behind a wealth of aircraft that the museum has preserved. Since Latvian independence in 1991, the collection has been maintained and expanded with donations from private collectors and decommissioned airline fleets.
What you see
The museum’s outdoor display includes jet fighters, transport aircraft and helicopters of Soviet manufacture, including types once operated by Aeroflot and the Soviet Air Forces. Indoor exhibitions cover cockpit instrumentation, aviation uniforms, photographs and documents tracing the development of Latvian civil aviation. Several aircraft have been restored to display condition, and informational panels provide historical context in Latvian and English.
Cultural significance
The Riga Aviation Museum is a key site for preserving the industrial and technological heritage of the Soviet era in the Baltic states. It offers visitors an unusually accessible encounter with large-scale aviation hardware that is increasingly rare, as many aircraft of this type have been scrapped across the former Soviet Union.
