Rifugio Val di Fumo
An alpine refuge nestled in the Valle di Fumo, one of the Adamello Group’s most expansive valleys, offering access to dramatic mountain terrain and pastoral landscapes.
At a glance
The Rifugio Val di Fumo serves as a base for exploring the Valle di Fumo, a continuation of the Valle di Daone. The valley is framed by the hydroelectric basin of Malga Bissina and the Chiese river, with routes featuring both flat stretches and gentle ascents through largely unspoiled terrain.
History
The refuge stands within the broader landscape shaped by the Adamello Group and Presanella massifs. The valley’s modern character was influenced by hydroelectric development, with an imposing dam creating an artificial lake that now forms part of the scenic route.
What you see
The main path divides into two options. The right-hand route presents an uneven surface suitable for older children comfortable with stone-hopping; the left path is more straightforward. Both lead to the same destination through a landscape where alpine meadows host grazing cattle and horses. Numerous bridges span streams along the way—from robust stone constructions to simple footbridges of stacked logs placed to keep feet dry.
Cultural significance
The Valle di Fumo represents one of the largest and most intact valleys within the Adamello Group. Its preservation as a pastoral landscape, combined with its hydroelectric heritage and accessible hiking routes, makes it significant to both mountain recreation and regional environmental history in the Trentino region.
