Rifugio Peller
A mountain refuge in the Brenta Dolomites, rebuilt twice after fire and restored to serve hikers and climbers crossing between Val di Non and Val di Sole.
At a glance
Rifugio Peller is one of 34 SAT (Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini) refuges in Trentino. Positioned in the Brenta Dolomites, it provides shelter for mountain travellers and is owned and maintained by the SAT section of Cles.
History
Built in 1903 on the initiative of SAT Cles members, the refuge came under definitive SAT ownership in 1914. A catastrophic fire in 1943 destroyed the building entirely. Members rebuilt it by 1952, only for another major fire to strike in 1962. Rather than restore the original site, the SAT relocated and reconstructed the refuge on the north-east side near Malgari, inaugurating the new structure in 1965. Recent renovations have updated the facility while maintaining its alpine character.
What you see
The current Rifugio Peller dates to 1965 and reflects post-war mountain-refuge design. Its position near Malgari on the north-east flank of Monte Peller commands views across the surrounding Dolomite peaks and valleys. The refuge functions as a working alpine lodge, built to withstand mountain conditions while offering hikers essential shelter and provisions.
Cultural significance
Rifugio Peller embodies the SAT’s historic mission to develop and maintain mountain infrastructure for climbers and walkers across Trentino. Its resilience—rebuilt twice after destruction—reflects both the dangers of alpine refuge life and the dedication of its volunteer maintainers. As one of the Dolomites’ working refuges, it connects the valleys of Non and Sole through mountain routes.
