Overview

Pesaro lies on the Adriatic coast of the Marche, where the Foglia river meets the sea. It is the capital of the Province of Pesaro and Urbino and an important regional centre. The city blends a historic core with a long seafront and beaches.

History

Pesaro is an ancient settlement that developed over many centuries on the Adriatic. During the Renaissance it was governed by noble dynasties who endowed it with palaces and fortifications. The composer Gioachino Rossini was born here in 1792, a legacy that remains central to the city’s identity.

What you see

The heart of the city is Piazza del Popolo, dominated by the Ducal Palace. The Rocca Costanza fortress recalls the city’s defensive past, while the cathedral preserves layered floor mosaics. Along the coast a broad promenade and beaches give Pesaro its seaside character, complemented by museums devoted to Rossini.

Cultural significance

Pesaro is internationally known through the annual Rossini Opera Festival, which celebrates its most famous son. The city also holds a place in Italy’s cultural network as a UNESCO Creative City of Music.
