Overview

Pergine Valsugana is a comune in Trentino, located about nine kilometres east of Trento. It stands at the western opening of the Valsugana, the valley that links the Trentino plateau with the Veneto plain. The town borders numerous mountain municipalities, including Levico Terme, Caldonazzo and Baselga di Pinè.

History

The settlement grew at a strategic point controlling the route between the Adige valley and the eastern Alpine valleys. Its hilltop castle, on the Tegazzo rise, dominated the medieval town and the surrounding farmland. Over the centuries Pergine passed under the influence of the Prince-Bishopric of Trento and the Tyrolean orbit, sharing the layered Italian and Germanic history typical of the region.

What you see

The most prominent landmark is Pergine Castle, rising on its wooded hill above the centre. The historic core preserves its compact street pattern and parish church, while the broad Valsugana opens toward the nearby lakes of Caldonazzo and Levico. The setting combines an Alpine backdrop with the gentler farmland of the valley floor.

Cultural significance

As a gateway town on the Valsugana, Pergine has long connected the cultures of the Italian and German-speaking Alps. Its castle and historic centre make it a focal point for the heritage of the wider Trento area.

Practical information

The historic centre and surrounding lakes are freely accessible year-round. For castle visits, events and opening times, check the official municipal website.

Getting there

Pergine Valsugana lies on the Trento–Venice Valsugana railway line and is well served by regional trains and buses from Trento, roughly nine kilometres to the west. By car it is reached via the SS47 road through the Valsugana.
