Overview

Nus is a town and comune in the Aosta Valley region of northern Italy. It sits in the central valley along the course of the Dora Baltea, the river that drains the western Alps. Like most of the region, it is part of a French- and Italian-speaking community with a distinct Valdôtain Alpine culture.

History

Nus developed as a settlement in the central Aosta Valley, a corridor that has linked the Italian plain to the western Alpine passes since Roman times. The valley’s towns grew around the route running west toward Aosta and the high passes of the Great and Little St Bernard. Over the centuries the area belonged to the domains of the House of Savoy, whose influence shaped the region’s administrative and cultural identity.

What you see

The town occupies the valley floor and lower slopes flanking the Dora Baltea, surrounded by the steep terrain of the western Alps. Its setting is typical of the Aosta Valley, with vineyards and meadows on the sunnier slopes and high mountains rising on either side. Traditional stone-built Alpine architecture characterises the older parts of the settlement.

Cultural significance

As one of the comuni of the Aosta Valley, Nus belongs to a region with a strong bilingual heritage and a long tradition of Alpine life. It contributes to the cultural landscape of a valley known for its castles, vineyards and mountain communities.
