Overview

The resort sits directly across Las Vegas Boulevard from the MGM Grand, at the “Four Corners” intersection with Tropicana Avenue. Its mixed-skyline façade compresses several Manhattan landmarks into a single elevation visible from much of the southern Strip. The property is operated as part of MGM Resorts International’s portfolio, sharing loyalty programmes and services with neighbouring resorts. It remains one of the most photographed exteriors in Las Vegas.

History

The project was developed as a joint venture by MGM Grand, Inc. and Primm Development; the site was previously occupied by the Dunes Hotel and Casino, which was demolished in 1993. Architects Gaskin & Bezanski designed the exterior to incorporate twelve scaled-down replicas of New York skyscrapers, including a 47-story interpretation of the Empire State Building standing 529 feet (161 m) — the tallest structure in Nevada when it opened in 1997, until Wynn Las Vegas surpassed it in 2005. MGM Mirage (later MGM Resorts) consolidated full ownership over subsequent years.

What you see

The exterior presents a compressed Manhattan panorama: the Statue of Liberty replica stands approximately 150 feet (46 m) tall, about one-third the height of the original, while the Brooklyn Bridge replica carries pedestrians from the Strip into the complex. Inside, the casino floor’s décor references New York neighbourhoods including Greenwich Village, Times Square and the Financial District. The Big Apple Coaster winds around the hotel’s tower structures and has become a signature attraction, reaching speeds of up to 67 mph (108 km/h).

Cultural significance

New York–New York exemplifies the “themed megaresort” phase of Las Vegas development in the mid-1990s, when properties competed to offer immersive architectural experiences rather than gaming alone. Its Statue of Liberty replica became an informal memorial site following the 11 September 2001 attacks, covered spontaneously with flowers, flags and tributes by visitors. The property is frequently cited in discussions of postmodern urbanism and the aesthetics of simulation.
