National Cinema Museum
Housed within the iconic Mole Antonelliana, this museum traces cinema’s evolution through a spiraling exhibition that blends rigorous scholarship with spectacular display design.
At a glance
The National Cinema Museum occupies multiple levels of Turin’s most recognizable landmark. Swiss set designer François Confino orchestrated the layout to follow the building’s dramatic vertical ascent, creating thematic galleries that chronicle cinema from its technical origins to contemporary practice.
History
The museum was established within the Mole Antonelliana, a structure that itself symbolizes Turin’s cultural identity. Confino’s curatorial design respects the building’s architectural logic while presenting cinema history as an upward journey through time and technique.
What you see
The experience unfolds spirally across several levels. The Cinema Archeology floor features eight thematic areas demonstrating optical devices and performances foundational to cinema’s invention. The Temple Hall forms the museum’s dramatic core, ringed by galleries devoted to major film genres and a dedicated section on the Italian silent masterpiece Cabiria. A helical ramp ascends toward the dome, housing temporary exhibitions and offering vertiginous views. The Cinema Machine section explores production components—studios, direction, screenplay, performance, costume, set design—while the Manifesto Gallery traces film history through posters, graphics and advertising that reveal evolving aesthetic tastes.
Cultural significance
The museum’s design philosophy mirrors cinema itself: visitors experience fascination through carefully orchestrated visual and spatial sequences. By situating film history within Antonelliana’s soaring interior, the museum positions cinema as integral to Turin’s modern identity and Turin as a historic center of filmmaking.
