National Archaeological Museum of Sibaritide

A museum and excavation site preserving artifacts from ancient Sybaris, including a rare bronze dedication table to Athena and extensive remains of the Roman city of Copia.

At a glance

Located between the archaeological park of ancient Sybaris and the modern town of Sibari, this museum combines indoor collections with an active outdoor excavation site. The museum has recently expanded its role as a repository for antiquities illegally removed from Italy, receiving repatriated objects from international institutions including the US Getty Museum.

History

The site documents two major periods of settlement. Ancient Sybaris flourished as a Greek colony before its destruction in the 5th century BC. The Romans later established Copia on the same location, leaving substantial architectural remains. Systematic excavation has revealed the urban fabric of the Roman city, including domestic structures and public infrastructure.

What you see

The public excavation extends approximately 500 meters on each side and exposes significant stretches of Copia’s main streets. Visitors can examine the foundations and mosaic floors of numerous villas, demonstrating the wealth of the Roman settlement. One villa preserves the remains of a small swimming pool. Behind the scenes, restricted areas support ongoing conservation and documentation of newly discovered objects.

Cultural significance

The museum’s most celebrated artifact is a bronze table inscribed with a dedication to Athena, commissioned by Kleombrotos, son of Dexilaos, who won a competition at Olympia in the early 6th century BC. This piece exemplifies the Greek cultural connections of the region. The museum’s recent acquisitions from foreign collections underscore its role in the recovery of Italian cultural property and the fight against antiquities trafficking.
