Montebelluna, Veneto

Museum of the Boots and Sports Shoes

A sixteenth-century villa chronicles the rise of Montebelluna’s footwear industry, one of Europe’s most important sporting goods manufacturing hubs.

At a glance

Housed in the Villa Binetti-Zuccareda, the Museum of the Boots and Sports Shoes documents the history and innovation of the Montebelluna SportSystem District. The collection spans design, production, and the global reach of locally made athletic footwear. The museum organizes exhibitions, conferences, and educational programmes for schools and groups.

History

The museum opened on November 4, 1984, in a villa purchased by the municipality in 1982. The Museo dello Scarpone Association, founded by Aldo Durante in 1986, established the foundation that has managed the institution since 1992. It now serves as a research center and ambassador for Made in Montebelluna worldwide, with exhibitions held in cities including Cortina, Turin, New York, and Moscow.

What you see

The sixteenth-century villa provides a period setting for displays exploring footwear design, craftsmanship, and technological innovation. Exhibits trace the district’s evolution from artisanal production to modern manufacturing. The foundation participates annually in Ispo, Europe’s leading sporting goods trade fair.

Cultural significance

The museum preserves the story of Montebelluna’s transformation into a global center for performance footwear. It documents not only the boots and shoes themselves but the industrial, commercial, and design heritage that made the district internationally competitive. The institution serves as a cultural reference point for the region’s economy and identity.
