MUGA – Garibaldi Museum in Mentana
A museum dedicated to the Battle of Mentana (1867) and the volunteers of Giuseppe Garibaldi, housing artifacts from one of Italy’s first photographically documented military conflicts.
At a glance
The Garibaldi Museum preserves the material history of the Battle of Mentana, fought on November 3, 1867, between Garibaldi’s volunteer forces and the papal army. The museum holds historical finds including rifles, uniforms, medals, and coins, alongside an ossuary containing 300 remains of fallen Garibaldini.
History
The Battle of Mentana marked a decisive papal victory. Garibaldi’s poorly equipped volunteers, weakened by desertions following Rome’s fall, faced a well-prepared papal force bolstered by French military support. The defeat allowed the Papal State to survive another three years, enabling Pope Pius IX to convene the First Vatican Council in June 1868.
The battle’s historical significance extends beyond its outcome. It became Italy’s first military engagement documented through photography, with images capturing the battlefield and the encampments of both armies—an invaluable visual record of 19th-century warfare.
What you see
Following restoration in 2017, the museum operates across two distinct wings. One section displays original memorabilia, weapons, and artifacts from the battle and the First World War. The second wing employs multimedia presentations, screening films about Mentana’s history and the pivotal 1867 engagement.
Connected to the museum stands a monument to fallen soldiers from the great wars and an ossuary housing the remains of the Garibaldini. The building itself bears the inscription “Rome or Death”—the rallying cry of Garibaldi’s movement.
Cultural significance
The Battle of Mentana represents a turning point in Italian unification history. Its documentation through photography provided unprecedented visual evidence of military campaigns, influencing how wars would be recorded and understood. The museum preserves not only objects but testimony to the ideological struggle that shaped modern Italy.
