Overview

The Province of Verona encompasses an exceptionally varied heritage landscape: the UNESCO-listed historic city of Verona to the east, the southern shore of Lake Garda with its Scaligero towers (Sirmione, Lazise, Malcesine) to the west, and the Valpolicella hills to the north — famous for Amarone and Ripasso wines and dotted with Romanesque parish churches. The area around Villafranca di Verona also preserves a 13th-century Scaligero castle, one of the best-maintained examples of Lombard-Veronese military architecture in the region.

History

Villafranca di Verona was founded in 1185 as a free commune (villa franca, meaning “free town”) by the commune of Verona to control the southern plains and the road to Mantua. The Scaligeri built a substantial castle here in the 13th century to defend the territory, which remains largely intact. The town is also notable in European history as the site of the Armistice of Villafranca (1859), which ended the Second Italian War of Independence and shaped the political map of northern Italy. This layered history makes the Verona hinterland a rewarding area for heritage-minded travellers.

What you see

The immediate surroundings of Villafranca include the moated Castello Scaligero di Villafranca (open to visitors), the historic parish church of San Giovanni Battista, and a network of rural roads through vineyards and olive groves connecting to the Garda shore. Verona’s historic centre — with the Arena, Castelvecchio, Piazza delle Erbe, and Scaligero tombs — is approximately 15 kilometres to the east. Lake Garda’s southern tip (Peschiera del Garda) is roughly 15 kilometres to the west.

Cultural significance

The Verona province holds an exceptionally high density of heritage assets per square kilometre, from prehistoric pile dwellings on Lake Garda (UNESCO listed) to Roman remains, medieval fortifications, Renaissance villas, and Baroque churches. Staying in the Villafranca area allows visitors to access this breadth of heritage while avoiding the higher accommodation costs and summer congestion of central Verona and the lakefront.
