Overview

Mirandola is a city and comune of Emilia-Romagna, Italy, in the Province of Modena, 31 kilometres (19 mi) northeast of the provincial capital by railway. It stands on the flat lower plain of the Po basin in the area known as the Bassa Modenese.

History

Mirandola was for centuries the seat of the House of Pico, a noble family who ruled it as an independent lordship and later a principality. The most celebrated member of that line was the Renaissance philosopher Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. The town’s fortified centre and castle reflect its long history as a contested stronghold on the plain.

What you see

The historic centre preserves the castle of the Pico family and traces of the former fortifications that once enclosed the town. The 2012 Emilia earthquake caused significant damage to several historic buildings, and restoration work has shaped the appearance of the centre in the years since.

Cultural significance

As the birthplace of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, the city carries a strong association with Italian Renaissance humanist thought. Its castle and former ducal seat document the role of small independent states in the political landscape of early modern Emilia.
