History
The square was built in 1869 as part of Florence’s sweeping urban transformation following its designation as the capital of Italy. Poggi’s vision extended beyond the terrace itself: the Viale dei Colli, an 8-kilometer tree-lined panoramic road winding up the hill of San Miniato, was traced to connect the city center to this elevated vantage point.
The construction was not without controversy. Contemporary journalist Pietro Coccoluto Ferrigni (writing under the pseudonym Yorick) documented the rapid building campaign and noted that some Florentines objected to the “excessive expense” of the project. Between 1890 and 1935, the area hosted the Chianti tramway, which linked Florence to San Casciano Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti.

The square functions as a privileged belvedere, its design prioritizing unobstructed sight lines across Florence. From this vantage point, visitors survey the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and the surrounding Tuscan landscape. The plaza remains largely open, preserving the panoramic experience that motivated its creation.
