Overview
The MIC occupies a wing of the Sforzesco Castle, placing one of the world’s most distinctive specialised collections inside a landmark 15th-century ducal complex. The museum documents the full arc of footwear culture from handcrafted Renaissance chopines to bespoke shoes made for popes, royalty, and Hollywood stars. It is internationally recognised as the reference institution for the history and design of the shoe, drawing researchers and fashion historians alongside general visitors.
History
Vigevano has been the heart of Italian footwear manufacturing since at least the 19th century, and the city’s economic and cultural identity has long been inseparable from the shoe industry. The museum was established in 1988 after Pietro Bertolini, a passionate local collector, donated his extraordinary personal archive of historic footwear to the city. The collection has grown steadily through donations and acquisitions, and today comprises thousands of pairs spanning five centuries, including examples from the collections of Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana, Pope John Paul II, and Sophia Loren.
What you see
The permanent galleries present footwear organised by period, function, and cultural significance, with highlighted showcases dedicated to celebrity shoes and items of particular historic rarity. Exhibits include sumptuous 17th- and 18th-century European court shoes, early 20th-century Art Deco designs, and contemporary creations by leading Italian and international designers. The castle setting adds atmospheric depth to the experience, with exhibits displayed in rooms that retain original architectural features of the Sforza ducal palace.
Cultural significance
As the only institution in the world dedicated exclusively to the international history of footwear, the MIC occupies a singular position in the landscape of European design museums. It anchors Vigevano’s global reputation as a city of craft excellence and serves as a pilgrimage site for fashion historians, designers, and collectors. Its location inside a UNESCO-context castle reinforces the continuity between Italian Renaissance patronage and contemporary design culture.
