MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts

Italy’s first national museum dedicated to contemporary art and architecture, housed in a landmark building by Zaha Hadid and operating as an experimental cultural campus.

At a glance

MAXXI is a dual-institution museum comprising MAXXI Arte and MAXXI Architettura, two distinct but complementary divisions under one roof. The museum spans 13,500 square meters and operates as a living laboratory for 21st-century creativity, extending beyond visual art to encompass theater, dance, music, fashion, cinema and design.

History

The MAXXI was established through a Foundation created in July 2009 by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. Designed by the renowned Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, the museum represents Italy’s institutional commitment to contemporary cultural practice. MAXXI Architettura holds the distinction of being Italy’s first national architectural museum.

What you see

Hadid’s design transforms the building itself into a manifesto of contemporary architecture. MAXXI Arte occupies 13,500 square meters of gallery space dedicated to visual works, while MAXXI Architettura houses models, drawings, photographs and archival documents that trace architecture’s evolution from conception through realization and cultural integration.

Cultural significance

The museum operates on a dual philosophy. MAXXI Arte functions as an experimental space for multidisciplinary creativity, collecting and exhibiting contemporary works while hosting performances and interdisciplinary programming. MAXXI Architettura simultaneously historicizes 20th-century architecture and engages contemporary architectural questions, serving as archive, library and gathering space for visitors of all ages.
