Masnago Castle
A medieval fortification transformed into a Renaissance villa, Masnago Castle houses remarkable International Gothic frescoes and now serves as Varese’s museum of modern and contemporary art.
At a glance
Masnago Castle began as a 12th-century defensive tower, part of a network of sightings and signal posts across the Varese area. Over successive centuries, it evolved into an elegant residential villa overlooking the Mantegazza Park. Today it hosts the Civic Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, displaying works by Pellizza da Volpedo, Giacomo Balla, and Lucio Fontana.
History
Built in medieval times as a fortification, the castle’s imposing square tower dates to the 12th century and functioned as a watchtower connected to other towers throughout the Varese landscape. The Castiglioni family oversaw significant modifications and expansions that reshaped the fortress into a villa residence.
Around the mid-15th century, the family commissioned frescoes in the International Gothic style to decorate the castle’s principal rooms. These remarkable works remained hidden until their discovery in 1938. Since 1995, Masnago Castle has housed the Civic Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, with collections drawn from the Villa Mirabello Pinacoteca and the Giaccari video library archives.
What you see
The castle’s exterior retains its medieval tower, a substantial square structure that anchors the composition, while later additions create the villa-like appearance visible today, particularly in the facades overlooking the park.
Inside, two rooms showcase the castle’s most precious decorative heritage: the Sala degli Svaghi displays scenes of leisure and outdoor pursuits in the Varese countryside, offering a window into courtly life. The Sala dei Vizi e delle Virtù presents personified female figures embodying vices and virtues, serving as moral instruction for the castle’s patrons. These frescoes form an articulated decorative cycle of exceptional sophistication.
Cultural significance
Masnago Castle exemplifies the transformation of medieval military architecture into Renaissance domestic space—a common trajectory across northern Italy. The frescoes represent a vital artistic document of 15th-century courtly values and aesthetic taste, rendered in the refined International Gothic vocabulary.
As home to the Civic Museum, the castle continues its cultural role, presenting modern and contemporary masterworks that span from late 19th-century Italian painting to post-war abstraction.
